October Challenge: YES! Boat Design Kit

October’s Young Engineer Series Challenge – Boat Design Kit

This month’s challenge might get you wet, but we’re looking forward to seeing how far you can go and how fast you can get there!

Challenge 1: Distance

Speed doesn’t matter for this one.  How far can you get your boat to travel?

Rules:

  • Your boat design must include at least one pontoon from your kit.
  • No more than $10 worth of additional material or parts may be used in your boat.
  • Your design must be safe (in our opinion) to operate.
  • Movement due to natural water currents will be excluded. (No, you can’t just drop it in your local river.)

Challenge 2: Speed

How quickly can your boat travel 7ft under its own power?

Rules:

  • Your boat design must include at least one pontoon from your kit.
  • Your boat’s power source must be a single rubber band from your kit.
  • No more than $10 worth of additional parts or material may be used in your boat.
  • Your design must be safe (in our opinion) to operate.
  • Your boat must not exceed 1ft in length at any time during its run.
  • The boat operator may not push or assist the boat in any way during its run.
  • Helpful Tip: Your track can be any stationary body of water (pool, pond, rain gutter, etc.) that provides 8ft or more of navigable water.
